Joshua 24:1-8, 13-15 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. One of the things that is such an important part of being God’s disciples is talking about God on a regular basis, especially with those with whom we are closest—our families, no matter who our family is and how frequently we are able to connect with them.
God told his people long ago, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 6:4–7)
When Moses spoke those words to God’s people, he was talking about the commandments and law he gave to them. But at the heart of the law was God’s incredible love and grace shown to them, delivering them from bondage and bringing them into the promised land and all the blessings he offered.
God has done no less for us, delivering us from sin and giving us a promised life through His Son, Jesus Christ. The life we live now is really Jesus living in us and extending His Kingdom through us. And what that life looks like, and from where it came, is something that we too should be talking about—with our children, our spouse, our parents, our siblings, our friends, and anyone else who is family to us.
And that talk includes when we sit in our house (maybe even sitting around the table), when we go about our day, and at all times during our day.
