Deaf Ministry

We are thrilled to have our Deaconess, April Ramsey, offer ASL interpretation during worship on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. During the school year, she works with Deaconess Becky Jungklaus, ASL Lead Evangelist Trainer, to offer free sign language classes on those same Sundays at 1 pm.

Our 2025 VBS Mission Impact Focus was Deaf Family Grow – Southeast Texas, a local ministry sharing the Gospel with the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community through interpreted worship, Bible studies, ASL classes, and more—all offered free of charge.

Interesting Facts About ASL & the Gospel

  • American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete language – it’s a rich, fully developed language with its grammar, structure, and culture.
  • ASL is the third most widely used language in the US, after English and Spanish.
  • 98% of deaf and hard-of-hearing people don’t know Jesus. The deaf are considered one of the largest unreached people groups in North America. That makes Deaf ministry one of the most important mission fields – right here at home!
  • Deaconess Becky Jungklaus has an excellent article with the Texas District LCMS, “A Lost Sheep Found: Avery’s Story.”
  • Projects like Deaf Missions’ ASLV (American Sign Language Version) are working to bring the entire Bible to life in sign language.
  • Visual language, visual Gospel – ASL is uniquely suited to share the Gospel because it relies on expression, movement, and storytelling—the same tools Jesus often used to teach!
  • ASL classes = mission opportunities! Learning just a few signs opens doors to communicate God’s love with someone who may never have heard it before. “Jesus loves you” in ASL is powerful and personal.
  • Deaf culture values community – Just like the early church in Acts, Deaf communities are often close-knit and supportive. Sharing Jesus through ASL naturally builds on this sense of connection and care.

🙌 A Simple Gospel Message in ASL:

Jesus ✝️: Touch the middle of each palm (symbolizing the nails).

Loves ❤️: Cross your arms over your chest.

You 👉: Point to the person.

Try it out—it’s a beautiful way to share God’s love visually!
